CAPA high school
scholar award winners announced
CAPA announced the three high school scholar award recipients from the class of 2008: Diana Chen (Troy High), Julia Kong, and Christy Duan (Novi High). The other finalists were Heidi Chiu (Troy Athens), Timothy Liu (Detroit Country Day), and Sarah Yu (Plymouth High). All the candidates have impeccable academic records with an impressive list of accomplishments in extra-curricular activities and community service. On Dec. 7, over 110 Asian American community members and allies came together to dialogue about the "Power of a United Voice: Empowering the Asian Pacific American Vote." Doua Thor, Executive Director of the Southeast Asia Resource Action Center, was the keynote speaker. Participants dialogued about community issues and barriers that our community faces in civic engagement. Growing up the child of immigrants, Frances Kai-Hwa Wang grew up both part of and slightly outside of Chinese culture and mainstream American culture. What does it mean to be Chinese? As acting editor of IMDiversity.com Asian American Village, Ms. Wang has written extensively on issues of identity and culture as process rather than simply one "Aha" moment in time. Chinese Americans seeks applicants for summer
internship program
OCA is seeking students for its ten week internship program. The application deadline is Mar. 15. The purpose of the OCA Internship program is to cultivate future leadership by providing students with an opportunity to be involved in the political and public policy process. Summer interns will be placed at a federal agency, non-profit, or congressional office that matches their interest and work full-time. Past interns have been placed in the offices of Congresswoman Pelosi, Congresswoman Berkley, and Senator Durbin; at the Department of Transportation, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Office of Management and Budget, the National Education Association, and the NAACP. Students
The International Leadership Foundation (ILF) will award up to 30 internships to help Asian Pacific American college students who will be future professional leaders in the arts, business, community, legal, and medical fields ILF will help the students better understand the workings of American government. Each ILF Fellow spends eight weeks during the summer working for a federal government agency in Washington, DC. Any undergraduate student with at least a 3.0 Grade Point Average at a college, junior college, or university is eligible to apply. Applicants must be United States citizens.
