"Persian Visions: Contemporary Photography from Iran" exhibit at University of Michigan Museum of Art
At the Museum of Art, 1301 South University, Ann Arbor, MI 48104. The first survey of contemporary Iranian photography to be presented in the United States, Persian Visions introduces the work of 20 talented artists, revealing a thriving, sophisticated artistic culture of range and depth that is almost completely unknown to American audiences. Their work forcefully undermines Western stereotypes of a much-mythologized and misunderstood culture, while at the same time refusing to offer a consistent alternative; the curator has privileged the idiosyncratic visions of individual artists who explore aspects of cultural, gendered, and individual identities in Iran at the beginning of the 21st century.

"Inge Morath and Arthur Miller: China" exhibit at University of Michigan Museum of Art
At the Museum of Art, 1301 South University, Ann Arbor, MI 48104. This exhibition explores a little- known chapter in a long creative partnership between Miller and his wife, noted Magnum photographer Inge Morath, bringing together hitherto unpublished photographs by Morath and commentaries from the pair's journals, created on trips to China in 1979 and 1983. The words and images of Morath and Miller suggest a China unified by hope for a brighter future, a citizen of the modern world. It provides a moving reminder of the long struggle and fierce aspiration that underlies this ancient civilization's "sudden" emergence as an economic superpower and thus enriches our perspective of a vitally important global neighbor.
