The start of Fall 2007 comes with a number of exciting events and occasions in Michigan's Asian Pacific American community. Because of the large number of events, CAPA's board is happy to bring you an extra edition of the (normally bi-monthly) e- newsletter this month.

Successful 2nd Annual Asian Food Tasting Festival!
Many new members joined CAPA on Aug. 25 for the second annual Asian Food Tasting Festival. Thanks to Jessica Fitzgerald, Membership Chair, for coordinating a fun event! CAPA members enjoyed food from a dozen Asian cultures, a "Bamboo Chef" live cooking demonstration by Willie Dechavez, Japanese tea ceremony, and dance presentations by Troy High School's Chinese Club and Melanee Hirvela & Mika Toreki's hula dance. CAPA wins best decorated ethnic booth award at Troy Daze 2007!
CAPA's cultural booth display at the annual Troy Daze Festival won the award for best decorated ethnic booth! Troy Daze took place on Sep. 15-16 and CAPA had a fun table for all ages, in the EthniCity Tent. The EthniCity Tent fostered the spirit of diversity and showcased the beauty, uniqueness and significance of all cultures. Thank you to Willie Dechavez and all the great volunteers who explained traditions, food and history of various Asian American communities to visitors. Please click here for pictures.

CAPA seeks Artistic Director for Splendor of the East
CAPA's Board of Directors seeks candidates for the Artistic Director position for Splendor of the East, May 2008. SOE is the only multi-cultural Asian performance event in Michigan. The Artistic Director will provide the necessary time & effort to present a cultural production at the highest possible standard of excellence in musicality, direction and performance. CAPA High School Scholar Awards available - Due Oct. 5
CAPA seeks Asian Pacific American high school seniors that plan to enter college to pursue undergraduate studies in liberal arts, business or fine arts. The cash award will be $1000 to three deserving applicants. Click here for more information & the application.

APA Leadership summit

CAPA is partnering with Asian Pacific Islander American Vote (APIA Vote)- Michigan on this year's exciting leadership summit! Keynote speaker to be announced. Various leaders will come together to build a stronger community.

The event will take place from 5:30 - 9:00pm at the Southfield Westin Hotel, 1500 Town Ctr., Southfield, MI, 48075. More information will be included in the next e-newsletter.

Asian Americans Health Fair
The Asian Center of Grand Rapids and Healthy Asian Americans Project (HAAP) are holding a health fair on Sep. 29, 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at Hong Kong market Center, 4242 S. Division, Kentwood, MI. Association of Chinese American's Annual Celebration: "Light the Torch for the Next Generation"
ACA will be holding a black tie optional event featuring keynote speaker Linda Forte, Senior Vice-President of Business Affairs, Comerica Bank. The event will take place at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn, Fairlane Town Center, 18900 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, MI. The cocktail reception begins at 5:30pm, the program commences at 6:30pm, the keynote is at 7:00pm, and the dinner will be served at 7:30pm. NaFFAA Region 3 Conference in Ohio
The National Federation of Filipino American Associations Region 3 will hold its third regional conference in Dayton, Ohio this fall. Detroit Asian Youth (DAY) Project Fall 2007 Opening Ceremony
12:00-2:00pm at St John Conner Creek, First Floor Conference Room, 4777 E. Outer Dr., Detroit, MI 48234. The DAY Project youth from the 2007 summer program, and the mentor team, are excited to present their successful video project!! Catch a glimpse into the lives of DAY Project youth & into current immigration issues facing Hmong and other families in Michigan, including the Vang family deportation case. We hope you will join us!

Paaralang Pilipino - Open enrollment
Enroll for classes at the Philippine American Community Center of Michigan (PACCM) between 1 and 4pm at PACCM, 17356 Northland Park Court, Southfield, MI. Class schedule is available online at http://www.paccm.org. Adult language classes are $40; line and ballroom dancing classes are $50/individual and $95/couple; hula dancing classes are $58.

Dragon Boat Festival
10am-5pm at Gallup Park in Ann Arbor. Twenty ancient style dragon boats will race down Huron River with drums & gongs. This is the first of its kind in Ann Arbor. Moon Festival Concert
The Chinese American Educational and Cultural Center of Michigan and Musica Viva International Concerts will hold the Moon Festival Concert celebrating the music of legendary Chinese composer, Wang Shu on Sep. 30, at 3:30 p.m. at Varner Hall, 220 N. Fourth Annual NaFFAA Michigan Excellence Banquet
Registration begins at 6:30pm; the program begins at 6:30pm at the Troy Hilton, 5500 Crooks Road, Troy, MI. At the banquet in reconition of Filipino American History Month, NaFFAA-MI will honor twelve Filipino Americans with Excellence Awards for outstanding accomplishments in their individual field of endeavor. Philippine Ambassador to the US H.E. Willie C. Gaa will give the Keynote Speech. An Asian Fashion show will highlight the event's entertainment portion. Margaret Cho at the Whiting (Flint, MI)
Fiercely outspoken comedian and activist Margaret Cho brings down the house with her incisive humor, witty antics and spontaneous art of stand-up comedy, at 7:30pm at The Whiting, 1241 E. Kearsley St., Flint, MI. Author of the national bestseller "I'm the One that I Want" and "I Have Chosen to Stay and Fight," Margaret Cho's comic rage is meant not only to entertain but to raise awareness for the social injustices that are her impassioned causes - freedom of expression, gay rights and racial discrimination. APACC "Building Your American Dream" Workshop - Starting Your Dream
4:30 - 8:00pm at Embassy Suites, Southfield, MI. This is the first in a series of four educational workshops, and features Janny Lu, Dominic Pangborn, and Wally Tsuha as the panelists. This one will include a panel of Asian Americans who will share their personal experiences of their journey to success, dinner & networking, and breakout sessions with experts on strategies & tips. Governor's Advisory Council on Asian Pacific American Affairs Update

The next bi-monthly meeting is Oct. 19, 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon, at the Chinese Community Center, 32585 Concord Dr., Madison Heights, MI. Matt Shiraki is new White House Asian Pacific American Liaison
Matt Shiraki will serve as the new White House Asian Pacific American Liaison. He will represent the White House at community events and will organize briefings and outreach activities for Asian American and Pacific Islander constituency groups. The son of Korean and Japanese-American parents, Matt was born and raised in the U.S. territory of Guam. His family now lives in the Philadelphia area and he currently resides in Arlington, Virginia. National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (NCAPACD) 2008 Congressional Fellowship & Spring Internship
National CAPACD seeks applicants for these exciting opportunities. The fellow will provide leadership on housing issues while working with the Congressional APA Caucus, learn about federal housing and community development policies while gaining experience working in Congress, and raise awareness among elected officials, policymakers and advocates; fellowship applications are due Oct. 15. The intern will meet community and congressional leaders, engage in substantive research and writing, organize and/or attend local and national events; internship applications are due Nov. 15. AALDEF Voting Rights Fall Internships
AALDEF's Voting Rights Program aims to enhance the political participation of Asian Americans and guard against anti-Asian voter discrimination. Internships are available for for Undergraduate, Graduate, and Law Students. Click for more information.
