"Last week, Glenn Magpantay, voting rights staff attorney at the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, presented a report on the multilingual Michigan exit poll in the 2006 elections.

78% of all surveyed Asian Pacific American voters voted NO on Proposal 2. This is a huge testament to the never before seen APA community education effort on the truth about affirmative action and consequences of Proposal 2.

This is a terrific opportunity to remind our elected officials what issues Asian Pacific Americans care about in Michigan. It is an opportunity to show that we can come out in numbers to vote overwhelmingly in one direction on important ballot initiatives. Also, it is time to address barriers to voting and increase language assistance!"

Governors Advisory Council on Asian Pacific American Affairs Updates

ACAPAA held a very productive strategic planning retreat on Mar. 23, in Lansing to affirm their mission and discuss their goals for the next four years. The four committees -- Civil Rights, Education, Health, and Immigration -- outlined specific recommended goals and milestones to accomplish each year. More emphasis will be placed on collaboration with APA community organizations.

On Mar. 30, the Immigration Committee of ACAPAA hosted an Immigration Law Seminar in Lansing. Six immigration attorneys made presentations on Work Visa Categories, Employer Compliance, PERM Labor Certification and Employment-based Permanent Residency, Schedule A - Nurses and Physical Therapists, Family-based Permanent Residency, Violence Against Women Act, and Removal/Deportation.
