12/7/05 - APA Leadership Summit III
"Learning & Leading Together – APA Civil Rights Issues” is the theme of this year's APA Leadership Summit. This Summit is co-hosted by CAPA, Governor's Advisory Council on Asian Pacific American Affairs, and American Citizens for Justice, and sponsored by SBC. We proudly welcome Ms. Linda Parker, J.D., Director of Michigan Department of Civil Rights, as our keynote speaker to the APA community. Ms. Pravina Ramanathan, J.D. from the Department of Civil Rights will present actual civil rights cases filed by Asian Pacific Americans. Click for details, registration and credit card payment.

12/10/05 - Multicultural Families Workshop: Strategies for Raising Our Children with Culture(s)
CAPA hosts the first Multicultural Families Workshop aimed at families living multicultural lives or wanting to add more either language or culture(s) into their everyday world. This workshop presented by Frances Kai Hwa Wang is geared for blended culture families through marriage, adoption or same race families working to raise children with vibrant and robust Asian American identity and pride. 2. Starfish Program

With the launch of CAPA’s newest outreach program well underway, The Starfish Program – Helping Families One by One continues to grow and develop.

CAPA invites all of you to read about the work we’ve done so far, and consider ways in your own lives that you might be of real help, especially to those who might be forgotten or not accustomed to asking for help. Each of us can play a part in the enormous task of rebuilding the part of our country.

3. What’s New with CAPA?

CAPA is excited to announce Carmen Johnson as a newly appointed Advisory Board Member. Carmen is currently Director of External Affairs for SBC, responsible for public relations and government affairs in Oakland County. Her years of experience and knowledge will provide CAPA will valuable guidance as CAPA continues to grow.

CAPA proudly welcomes our first Intern, Stephanie Chang, a native of Canton, Michigan to our Education Committee. 4. Editorial Column – featured in CAPA Blog

HAAP is for Healthy Asian Americans, by Janilla Lee, Ph.D.

From the 2000 census report, 21.9% of Asian Americans had annual income $100K or more, nearly double that of the U.S. population (13.8%). Under the shadow of this big header labeling Asian Americans as an affluent group, it is easily overlooked that there are still 22.3 % of Asian Americans (29% for total U.S. population) below the poverty line of annual income $25K or less. They need help, even more so than other low-income Americans because of language and cultural barriers.

For this reason, the Healthy Asian American Program (HAAP) at the University of Michigan School of Nursing is to provide health service to the underserved people...

5. Guest Voice

Frances Kai-Hwa Wang is this month’s guest voice. A second generation Chinese American from California she is currently the editor for IMDiversity.com – Asian American Village, the Outreach Coordinator for the Ann Arbor Chinese Community Center of Michigan and a much sought after speaker on culture, family arts, and lifestyle topics.

6. CAPA Goes Global
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the effort of helping with a national project in Philippines of transforming slums into beautiful and peaceful community, CAPA President, Katherine M. Lee, made a personal donation of $1,000 in the name of CAPA. CAPA will now have a house in its name in the Gawad Kalinga community in the Philippines. “I was very inspired by the project, and for only $1,000, a family can have a house to call their own! I was going to make the donation anyway, but I thought it would have more meaning if the house was in CAPA’s name instead!”, said Ms. Lee.


7. CAPA Shares

CAPA supports McNair Technical Middle School students as they open their hearts and raise money to provide help to the needy in their community during this Thanksgiving Day. Click here to read more.

CAPA, along with several other Asian Pacific community organizations in Michigan, participated the calling by the Governor’s Council on Asian Pacific American Affairs to pool together funds raised for Katrina Relief effort. Over $23,000.00 was raised and presented to Director Linda Parker of the MI Department of Civil Rights on behalf of the Governor. Click to learn more.

The Governor's Advisory Council for Asian Pacific American Affairs’ next meeting will take place on 12/5/05 at the Governor's Office in Lansing, 10 am to 1 pm, and is open to the public.
