Greetings!

Welcome to the CAPA e-News! In this day and age, staying in touch with family and friends can be a challenge. We're hoping that the e-News can do just that -- stay in touch with YOU.

1. 5th Annual Splendor of the East a Smashing Success

Message from Mi Dong, Chair of Splendor of the East 2005

CAPA did it again! This year, the program not only provided our audience with a great cultural performance but also gave a deeper historical background. The show was a smashing success because we had a live audience who shared their emotion and appreciation with all of us. I felt that our audience who attended the 5th Splendor of the East instantly became the extended CAPA family members. What an achievement it was for the group.

Chinese Soup Kitchen a Success - CAPA and CAGD

CAPA, along with other American Chinese Community Organizations, co-sponsored and participated in the 2005 Chinese Soup Kitchen event on May 23.

The Chinese Association of Greater Detroit (CAGD) was the lead organization for the event held at Detroit Rescue Mission in downtown Detroit. The "Soup Kitchen" has been an annual charity project for the last seven years aimed at serving the needy people in Detroit. It is a way to share our resources and the unique Asian cuisine with the rest of the community.

3. Welcome! CAPA Newly Elected Board Members
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Welcome Amy Risvold, a New CAPA Board Member
Chair of Community Services Committee
Message from Amy:
It is an honor and a privilege to serve as CAPA Community Services Representative. As the CSR, I will generously volunteer my service, talent and time to help CAPA meet its goals and objectives. I hope to make a difference, in my own little way, to serve the community particularly the Asian community. I work at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak as a Cardiology Nurse Clinician. I have been past President of the Philippine Nurses Association of MI and currently one of its Advisors. I am also passionate about my community involvement (involved with many Filipino organizations), as a Medical Mission volunteer, a past precinct delegate in Sterling Heights, and currently a volunteer teacher at the Philippine Community Center.
Welcome Marc Shulman, Newly Elected CAPA Advisory Board Member
The Council of Asian Pacific Americans would like to welcome prominent attorney and civic leader Marc Shulman to our Advisory Board. Welcome, Marc! We look forward to working with you.
A little about Marc Shulman:
Marc is a graduate of Michigan State University and the Cooley Law School, has maintained a private law practice since 1981 and also served as a West Bloomfield Township trustee. He is best known for making government more efficient during his four years as chair of the powerful House Appropriations Committee. He has also been active in working to gain grant funding for Automation Alley to spur economic development in Oakland County, and has been instrumental in advising Michigan companies looking to invest in and conduct trade with China. Shulman has also written into law a tax renaissance zone in Southfield and has been extremely active in helping gain scholarships for area high school students. Marc is a member of the Michigan State Bar Attorney Discipline Board, the West Bloomfield Rotary Club, West Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce and West Bloomfield Optimist Club.
He and his wife Lois live in the township with their four daughters.
Petition to Support HR418
HR814 bill will recognize Amerasians living in the US from five Asian countries: Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Kampuchea. Amerasians are not accepted in their motherland. Because of their Westernized appearance, they are often discriminated against and treated as foreigners without the basic rights to education, work, or marriage. Their precarious status is not recognized in their fatherland, the United States of America, either, forcing them to live in the periphery of the society. The Amerasians are forgotten people who desperately need your support.
If you would like to support this bill, please write a letter your state Congressman. For more information, please visit http://kawausa.org/tab_events/order2.htm. Petition to Support HR 814 Form is available online at, http://kawausa.org/tab_events/order2a1.htm.
