Simply the Best - My First CAPA Experience

    By Timothie Davis

As I entered Simply the Best on February 19th, 2005, my excitement was building. This was my first CAPA event, and I was extremely thrilled to meet everyone and hopefully get to network. I was also interested to see the diversity among the group. With my pen and paper in hand, I sat down and prepared myself for a day of exploration and learning.

The Simply the Best event, I later found out, is one of CAPA's annual events. With speakers from different walks of life and two workshops to help better the attendees, the program is designed to encourage those present to go out and make the most of their potential, whether it is regarding someone's career or life in general.

At about one 'o clock in the afternoon, the program began with an explanation of the Simply the Best event and a few words from CAPA's president, Katherine Lee. Then, the large group of attendees was split into two, and one group remained in the lobby while another group was sent to a meeting room just behind the main lobby. I was in the second group.

In the meeting room, those in attendance shared ideas of how to identify a goal and the plan to get to that goal. This portion of the day was very interesting. It was eye-opening to see what others considered their main goal in life and how they planned to achieve it. Some of their ideas actually helped me come up with a plan to reach my goal!

The section on how to do a proper interview was very informing. As someone who will graduate in June and will be going job hunting in the near future, I found this to be important. I paid attention to what exactly interviewers look for in an interviewee and how I should present myself. I found this helpful and extremely important.

My favorite part of the day was the networking session that took place after the two groups had seen both presentations. I loved seeing different cultures mesh and the food was great too! Here, I was able to meet those involved with CAPA, and was able to make a few connections regarding my budding career in journalism.

Overall, I enjoyed my first CAPA event. I valued the company of those in attendance and cannot wait to attend Splendor of the East.

Ed Note: Look forward to seeing you at SOE, Timothie!

Looks like we have a potential CAPA leader.
