3. Leadership Summit Follow-up
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Almost 100 leaders from various communities came together to learn about "Building Bridges," the theme of this year's summit. Dean Frank Wu of WSU Law School spoke about the Future of Civil Rights as the keynote speaker. We had the pleasure of having Dr. Charles Chambers, the President of Lawrence Technological University, introduce Dean Wu to an enthusiastic crowd. His very touching and inspiring keynote set the tone for us to engage in a bridge building activity.
Each table of eight people was challenged to build a bridge with arts and crafts material we had prepared. All of a sudden, the noise and excitement level in the room went up several notches. As we discussed how to build a bridge that could function with the given material, we also realized the metaphorical meaning of the activity. By building bridges and relationships, we build a stronger voice and a stronger foundation for our children, develop a deeper pride as Asian Americans, increase our understanding and appreciation of other cultures, and ultimately we can serve our communities better.
5. January is National Mentorship Partnership Month
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Being a mentor is one of the most important things you can do for a child. Research shows that 99% of the people who mentor would recommend it to others. So become a mentor and encourage a friend to become a mentor, too.
