Welcome to the CAPA e-News! In this day and age, staying in touch with family and friends can be a challenge. We're hoping that the e-News can do just that -- stay in touch with YOU.

CAPA brings together people of Asian descent and others who are interested in learning more about Asian Americans, their culture and heritage. CAPA is also commited to promote well-being of Asian Americans. I'd like to extend a personal invitation to you to join us at our next meeting. 1. CAPA announces new Board Members

November 6, 2004, at the Annual CAPA Membership meeting, new board members were elected. Please click for the results of the election.


2. President's departing remarks

Sook Wilkinson, Ph.D., President of CAPA, will be completing her two-year term at the end of 2004. Under her dedicated leadership, CAPA has enjoyed much success and attained visibility in the community.

3. Asian Pacific American Leadership Summit II
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CAPA presents Leadership Summit II on December 9th, 2004. The goal of this summit is to build bridges amongst various Asian Pacific American organizations and with community at large. People of all ethnic backgrounds are welcome to join. Tickets are only $20 per person and dinner is included. There are only 100 spots available. Registration deadline is December 3rd.

4. Next CAPA Board Meeting
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next CAPA Board Meeting will be taking place Saturday December 4, 2004. The meeting is at the Philippine American Community Center on 17356 Northland Park Court in Southfield Michigan from 9:30 am to 12 pm.

CAPA would like to extend the invitation to anyone who would like to learn more about us. Click to read the agenda for the meeting.


5. Two CAPA members inducted into Asian Academy Hall of Fame
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On November 13th, 2004, in Albuquerque, NM, the Academy of Asian Leaders (AAL) inducted a total of 8 people into the Asian Academy Hall of Fame. Of those six, three are from the Metro Detroit area, Dr. Sook Wilkinson, Dominic Pangborn, and Dr. Sean Wu. All three of the inductees are local community leaders and two are members of the Council of Asian Pacific Americans (CAPA).

6. Community project initiated by Hmong high school youth
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A group of Hmong high school youth and their mentors are working on a project to put together a newspaper. The primary goal is to outreach to the various Asian communities in the city and begin dialogues around community and politics. The focus of the publication is the Asian American community and Detroit.

There is a section, "Community Notes" that provides the space for the broader metro groups to be a part of the publication. The group would like to invite APA organizations around the metro area to submit articles or announcements. Please feel free to even submit a press release and the editorial board will summarize it. The due date to be included in the first issue is 12/5/04. For more information and submission, please email Michelle Lin at mlinz@bellsouth.net.


7. FILAMCCO's Rizal Day Celebration
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Filipino American Community Council is holding their annual Rizal Day Celebration at Cobo Hall on Dec. 18, 2004. Dr. Jose Rizal is the national hero of the Philippines. The community will commemorate Dr. Rizal's death on December 30, 1896 and celebrate his ideals and honor his legacy. The theme for this year is "Celebrating the Past...Shaping the Future" with Dr. Anthony Aramada, CEO of Henry Ford Hospital, as the keynote speaker. 8. Voters express concern for jobs & economy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In New York City The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) announced preliminary findings from its multilingual, nonpartisan exit poll of almost 11,000 Asian American voters in eight states. Asian American voters responded to written questionnaires translated into 9 Asian languages at 82 poll sites in 20 cities in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Virginia, Michigan, and Illinois.

9. Gates Scholarship Information
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Gates (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) Millennium Scholars program will select 1000 students per year. The scholarship supports the costs of attendance (books, tuition, fees, and living expenses), and can be renewed each year during the Scholars undergraduate program.

The award is renewable for graduate study for those scholars who choose one of the five graduate programs: math, science, engineering, education or library science.

Students are eligible if they are African-American, American Indian, Asian Pacific Islander or Hispanic, citizen of the US, 3.3 GPA, will enter an accredited college or university as full time in the fall of 2005, leadership abilities, etc. The deadline is January 14, 2005.
