Welcome to the CAPA e-News! In this day and age, staying in touch with family and friends can be a challenge. We're hoping that the e-News can do just that -- stay in touch with YOU.

CAPA brings together people of Asian descent and others who are interested in learning more about Asian Americans, their culture and heritage. CAPA is also commited to promote well-being of Asian Americans. I'd like to extend a personal invitation to you to join us at our next meeting. Thank-you for taking the time to read CAPA Michigan's first newsletter. The purpose of the newsletter is to inform you of what's happening in the Asian Pacific American Community. Please feel free to forward this to your friends & family and encourage them to sign-up for the newsletter. Spread the news and celebrate the rich culture and heritage of the Asian Pacific American Community with CAPA.

Here's how to join the newsletter:
Go to CAPA web site, www.capa-mi.org. Type in your email address at the 'Join CAPA Mailing List' box. Click 'Go' will lead you to the signup form.


2. Annual CAPA Membership Meeting and Tastes of Asia
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • When: November 6th, 2004, 9 am to 11 am
  • Where: Philippine American Community Center of MI
  • What: Election of new board members and officers, and much more
  • After the Annual Meeting, the regular CAPA Board Meeting will take place from 11 am to 12. Everyone is invited. Then, we'll celebrate the day with Tastes of Asia, a potluck luncheon, from 12 to 1 pm.

    3. Who's Who on CAPA's Advisory Board?
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The distinguished group of CAPA Advisory Board members brings critical matters or strategic issues to the attention of the Board. They have played key roles in helping CAPA move forward in the last two years, led by Mr. Fouad Ashkar of DTE Energy as Chairman and Mr. David Huiskens of Comerica as the Vice-Chairman.

    4. CAPA's Professional Development Series: Personal Effectiveness in an Organization

    • When: October 16th and 30th, Sat., 10 am to 3 pm
    • Where: Lawrence Technological University, Room E-159 Engineering Bldg, W 10 Mile (west of Evergreen), Southfield, MI.
    • Who: Open to all
    • Cost: $50 for both days
    • RSVP: tai@capa-mi.org by Oct. 15th
    The facilitators for this first Professional Development Series are Dr. Jagdish Danak and Mr. Chandresh Thakore.

    Dr. Danak will focus on the skills that facilitate individual achievement, such as: Self-awareness, Helpful communication, Art and usefulness of listening, Conflict (resolution) management, Power and Influence, and Empowerment.

    Mr. Thakore will present perspectives on various aspects of leadership, such as: Organization and Leadership, Major Responsibilities of a Leader, Traits of a Successful Leader, and some Examples of Leadership.

    6. Community Announcements

    a. NaFFAA presents: The Philippine American Friendship Banquet & Awards Night

    NaFFAA will be recognizing outstanding members of the Philippine American Community and celebrating October, Philippine American History Month. The event will take place Saturday, October 16th 2004, at the Ramada Inn in Southfield.

    b. Colors of Asia - An exclusive family carnival that captures the sights and sounds of Asia.

    India joins hands with China, Japan, Bangladesh, Philippines and other Asian countries to provide electrifying entertainment.

    Colors of Asia will be taking place on Saturday October 23rd at The Ford Community and Performing Arts Center in Dearborn from 11 am to 6 pm.

    d. The Art of Adoption
    In celebration of National Adoption Month in November, the Troy Library presents the Art of Adoption featuring adopted persons from Korea, China and India, and adoptive parents. The event is on November 7th, Sunday, from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. Shilla Restaurant will again donate samples of Korean dishes.

    CAPA salutes ...
    • Lora Snider has stepped down as Fundraising Chair. We'd like to thank Lora for all the generous efforts she has put forth and warmly welcome John Sicklesteel to take her place.
    • CAPA openly welcomes Peter Schreck, who will serve as the Legal Advisor for CAPA.
    • Sook Wilkinson, CAPA President, was recently chosen by the Asian Leaders Association to be inducted to the Asian Academy Hall of Fame.
    • Sook and Todd Wilkinson for being chosen as one of top 10 power couples in Michigan by CORP Magazine, Summer 2004 issue.
    • Tai Chan was recognized by the Organization of Chinese Americans and received National American Corporate Achievement Award.
    • Nati Jenks, CAPA Advisory Board member, received Vision in America Award.
    • Marie Weng, CAPA Board member, presented at the 5th Annual Senator Raymond M. Murphy Health Conference. Her article on the issue of Health Care in the Asian American Pacific Islander Community can be found at http://www.capa- mi.org/pdf_files/2004_pdf/health_care_marie.pdf.
